Hi Folks,
Note to self…Maybe it’s me, but I noticed the lack of flies around the area. Could that be a result of the warm summer?

RAVE RUN…
While I’m still waiting for a few folks to send in their Rave Runs from their latest races, I’ll need to add a quick one of my own.
Last Thursday, the group took the cemetery tour one last time for the season. On the west side of the cemetery along the outer loop, we found two cemetery plots of some famous Rockfordians. The first plot was of Lewis Lemon, one of the original founders of Rockford back in 1835. And about a block up the road from Mr. Lemon’s plot was Robert Faust’s final resting place, builder of the tallest building in Rockford, the Faust Hotel. A cemetery can yield many new adventures. Oh well, next year, we’ll need to venture to a different cemetery and discover a new adventure.
A few weeks ago, I received this internet story about a pretty remarkable firefighter in the Madison area.

For those running Chicago this weekend…good luck and have fun. It’s a great race and the folks of Chicago make it a very special race.
For others heading to other marathons, have fun in your races. While it may not be Chicago, any 26.2 is a great feat.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I received this note about an upcoming race.
Northwest Community Center run: Sunday, November 4th at Northwest Community Center off Johnston Avenue. Frank is ordering some really nice DriFit shirts and the pancake breakfast is included in the registration fee as well. Any questions, people can call Frank at 979-0936.
The Northwest Passage is a great race. I believed I placed in the race last year. (Please note Paul’s quote.) And what’s better, a pancake breakfast when you’re finished.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Remember…The Rockford Marathon and Half-Marathon registration is open. What are you doing May 19, 2013? If there’s enough interest, I’ll schedule our training next spring around the races.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tyranena Half-Marathon, Saturday, November 3, 2012.
Training schedule for the week: Same as last week…Thursday-4.5 miles and Saturday, 8-miles.
Registration is closed.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The days are getting shorter. This means we’re heading to our winter program so our running locations are limited. If you have an idea for a run, please drop me a note.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And now for some messages from the Hippy Dippy Weatherman.
I really think snow is predicted for this weekend. Get your cold weather gear, including lights, ready to run. We run in all types of weather.
And don’t forget; keep an old pair of running shoes for winter running. We’ll put some screws in the soles to help with winter (ice) running.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Interval training…Tuesday, 10.02.2012, Peak Training Facility on Perryville Road. Core fitness in the upper gym at 5:00 pm. After a short warm up run, it looks like they’re doing some fast / slow boxes. No core training, they’ll be heading out at 5:45 pm.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Don’t forget, September 2013? The BG is heading to the Cedar City Half-Marathon in Cedar City Utah. Book the date.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lessons learned…
(watch where you’re running…)
I saw a video clip this morning on TV (I believe on the Weather Channel) where a group of skateboarders are heading down and a deer runs across the road and tackles one of the skateboarders. Here’s the internet link: http://www.grindtv.com/outdoor/blog/35532/skateboarder+tackled+by+a+deer+during+downhill+event+in+colorado/.
While the possibilities are slim for runners to be slammed by a deer, there are other things such as cars, bicycles, and other runners who don’t watch where they’re going. So you need to be aware of what’s going on around you. Oh, almost forgot. There are some trails out west that caution runners against mountain lions.
BTW…the skateboarder wanted a replay but the substitute refs wouldn’t let him have it.

Running tip: Run facing oncoming traffic. Keep your eyes on approaching car and hit the ditch if he edges toward you!

Hi Folks,
Note to self…Got the first frost of the season. Snow is next.

RAVE RUN…
Last Saturday, I went to the Crusader Clinic 5K. It was a great race. The race was an out and back along Elm Street. There were about 60-70 runners and the race was chipped time.
Annie’s Locker was there handing out gear as well as other organizations providing healthy information and ideas to the runners and their families. Of course, I came in last. I walked the course because of my issues with my heel. My better half came with and outside of the wind, seemed to participate in the race. (You heard it here first, she beat me.) Along the race course, we picked up another runner, Julie. It was her first race and she was worried about finishing the full 3 miles. We kept her company along the course and helped her finish the race. She was delighted in the idea that she finished and that she didn’t come in last place.
Most of the time, when racing, we get lost in our thoughts and forget there are folks who are running their first race and who are afraid of the distance. Sure, 5K is easy for most of us. But for Julie, it seemed like she was running to the other side of the earth. Keep in mind that not everyone who toes the line at the start is a seasoned runner. Some are downright scared to death when the gun goes off.
Send me your favorite Youtube video’s, stories, and photos of moments, experiences, places, or people that you feel we can enjoy reading about in the BG email.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And now for some messages from the Hippy Dippy Weatherman.
I believe Ms Speedo mentioned on Facebook, that since there’s a nip in the air, she’s going to burn up a charge card soon. Besides winter gear, don’t forget a good headlamp and other lights to help with the darkness of the runs.
If you’re buying new running shoes soon, hold onto your old pair for a while. With a few screws, they can winter shoes. I’ll explain more in an upcoming email.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Interval training…Tuesday, 09.25.2012, Peak Training Facility on Perryville Road. It appears they’ll do some core fitness in the upper gym at 5:00 pm before heading north towards Rock Cut State Park. If you just want to head to Rock Cut (no core training), they’ll be heading out at 5:45 pm.

Hi Folks,
Note to self…Next year, I’ll bring a brighter light.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
RAVE RUN…
Before I write something for today’s Rave Run, I need to remind a few folks about their Rave Run. Someone doesn’t complete a Kettle Moraine Half-Marathon and Thin Mint Run without telling us about their trials and tribulations.
Last Thursday, Carol invited me to assist her and the rest of the Annie’s Locker group for a gear give away and run. They held the event at Fairgrounds Park. It’s great to see Carol and company helping folks get started in running. And while it was cooler and raining, folks showed up for gear and afterwards, a few of us ran around the park, though the run was short. If you love an activity, spend some time giving back to the community. We were all beginners at one time and we all learned from an expert in the sport. And now that we’re experts, don’t close the door to the newbies. Extend your hand and help them through the door of running. Carol through Annie’s Locker has help many runners get started in running and overcoming their running fears and doubts. A huge Thank You goes out to Carol and Annie’s Locker for helping local runners.
Last Friday, a crazy thought and activity came over me. Ms Scubie talked me into running the twilight Coyote 10K, part of the Hobo race weekend. Honestly, I was very comprehensive at first. I don’t run trails. But Ms Scubie held the infamous dangling carrot in front of me as a bribe. She said pizza will be waiting for us at the end of the race. We walked the race because I heard about falls along the trails and broken bones from others who have taken the journey before me. It was dark and our headlamps provided some light of the trail. Of course we got lost towards the beginning of the race but heck, that’s the adventure. Around mile three, the main pack of runners started to come through. And the stream of runners stayed with us until we crossed the finish line, some with dazzling lights that reminded me of a Christmas tree. We finished the race is 2 hours and 11 minutes. Of course, I let the ladies finish first, so Ms Scubie and Joyce finished ahead of me, making me the last place finisher.
The carrot dangled in front of me by Ms Scubie as a bribe for the race was gone by the time we got back. Yes, no pizza for me. Note to Larry…more pizza please. But I do have the token of a silver dollar sized blister on my heel that still hurts and oozes a clear fluid. But, more importantly, I’ve overcome my apprehension of running trails. Trails don’t bite. Sure, you can fall but I’m reminded of something I learned as a kid, you can heal from a fall. (Note to self…it just takes longer at my age.) Overall, I had a great time. It was a blast. I’ll be back next year and perhaps take in a Coyote run on a Saturday morning. And who knows, the Survivor series is coming up. I can choose to earn the shirt or I can buy the shirt on eBay. Though it’s a lot tougher, earning the shirt is the easier way to go.

The Mad Snapper strikes again. Ed and Terri after finishing the Hobo Series…85K in one weekend. And for icing on the cake, Chicago in three weeks. Geeks…That’s all I can say. Congrats Ed and Terri and the other BG’ers who ran races this past weekend.

Hi Folks,
Note to self…Tomorrow is the anniversary of the World Trade Center attacks. Where were you on when the attacks occurred? I was waiting to catch the train to the south rim of the Grand Canyon. While it’s a sad day in American history, seeing the Grand Canyon for the first time was breathtaking. It’s Mother Nature at her best.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
RAVE RUN…
A few weeks ago, we ran through the cemetery. We found my relatives. But you experience a lot while running through the cemetery. About 50 feet from my relatives is the Robert Tinker grave site. It’s rather large and has about 12 members of the Tinker family in the large plot. Robert Tinker is an early Rockford industrialist and has a house named after him. OK, he built the Swiss Cottage.
Also while running through the cemetery we decided to walk through St. Mary’s cemetery. There, we came upon the graves of Bishops Muldoon and Boylan. And there was the grave of Monsieur Green whom I enjoyed serving as an altar boy back at Saint Peter’s. Also, though it’s still unoccupied (I think), we stumbled on Bishop O’Neill’s plot.
We also tried to find the oldest tombstone. I believe we came across a tombstone that’s was from 1840.
You see a lot while out on a run even in a cemetery.
Send me your favorite Youtube video’s, stories, and photos of moments, experiences, places, or people that you feel we can enjoy reading about in the BG email.

West Nile Virus. It’s still out there.
A few weeks ago, I mentioned the chip monks around the house. Alvin’s telling me that it’s going to be a long, harsh winter. On my Sunday run, I noticed a chip monk eating berries on the Perryville bike path. This little guy was so fat that he barely got off the path when I came upon him. This confirms Alvin’s story. Fat hairy chip monks are a sign of long cold winter.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Interval training…Tuesday, 09.11.2012, Rock Cut State Park, Puri Crest Area, 5:45 pm. This will be a taper workout as most folks will be running the Hobo series this weekend.

Don’t forget, September 2013? The BG is heading to the Cedar City Half-Marathon in Cedar City Utah.
So, book the date.
I’ll be there…will you?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lessons learned…
When you’re running on a road, always remember to run against traffic. That is to say, run to the left side of the road. (Unless of course, you’re in the British Empire in which case, you’d run on the right side of the road.) This will help you watch traffic as it’s coming towards you and you can take evasive action should a car get too close to you.

Hi Folks,
Note to self…Please don’t take this the wrong way or for that matter, the right way. But Sadye Scott-Hainchek of the Rockford Newspapers posted this link on her Facebook page today. It’s kinda funny. I was able to shave 1:40 off my marathon time. The link is: http://www.paulryantimecalculator.com/.
Please, this is only for light humor and not an endorsement of one presidential candidate or another.

RAVE RUN…
This isn’t a rave run as it’s a rave encounter. As I was heading back to the parking lot on Saturday, I noticed a couple of horsemen crossing the road. It seemed they were taking an easy pace along their route. But, both of them were carry mugs of coffee in one of their hands. So, they’re ridding with one hand on the bridle and one hand with a mug of coffee. Stupid me, I thought horseback riding was a two handed event, you know like driving a car.
So, I’m wondering, when will Stubben Saddles start putting cup holders on their saddles for the riders? Do you think it’s coming? And what about John Wayne, all those years in the western movies? Do you think The Duke would want cup holders in his saddle? The line in the movie…”Come here little fella…let me grab my water bottle out of the saddle”.
Just my two cents.

Tyranena Half-Marathon, Saturday, November 3, 2012.
It looks like the training for this week is: Thursday-3.5 miles and Saturday, 5-miles.

And now for some messages from the Hippy Dippy Weatherman.
West Nile Virus. Just because it’s dry doesn’t mean the skeeters are gone. So, please use caution and use insect repellant to keep the skeeters at bay.
I noticed the sun setting earlier and earlier every day. At around 7:00 pm, as we’re finishing our Thursday run, the sun is pretty much gone over the horizon. So, please watch the times when you run and start wearing some reflective material. You want to be seen by others including the 4-wheeled demons.
And finally…bats. I don’t know if I dreamt this or I read it somewhere, but it appears that bats are becoming more active. And though it’s a bad wrap, it appears bats carry rabies. So, I don’t want to alarm you, but just be aware that bats are out and they can be dangerous.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Interval training…Tuesday, 09.04.2012, Rock Cut State Park, Puri Crest Area, 5:45 pm. This is a precursor to the Hobo Runs.

Don’t forget, September 2013? The BG is heading to the Cedar City Half-Marathon in Cedar City Utah.
So, book the date.
I’ll be there…will you?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lessons learned…
Last week it was your cell phone, this week it’s money. When you go out for a distance run, you may want to carry a few dollars with you. On a long run and you’re out a energy aka hit the wall…a stiff Coke may be what the doctors order. Most of the runs through this area, take you through a neighborhood where a convenience store is open.

Hi Folks,
Note to self…Let the games begin. They occur every four years and they can be just as exciting as the Olympics.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
RAVE RUN…
This Thursday’s run is the cemetery run. This time we’ll find my kin. And as someone pointed out last week, it’s a full moon. Oh, and a blue one at that.
Send me your favorite Youtube video’s, stories, and photos of moments, experiences, places, or people that you feel we can enjoy reading about in the BG email.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A few folks have asked about Tyranena Half-Marathon. It’s on the calendar. So, start training for the best 13.1 miles of running you can like in around the area.
The date is Saturday, November 3, 2012.
Please keep in mind…they close at 1500 registrants. And they close early. So if you’re thinking about running the classic, keep tabs with the website. And the website is: http://www.tyranena.com/beerrun/
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And now for some messages from the Hippy Dippy Weatherman.
Just a quick re-note about West Nile Virus. Please use caution and use insect repellant to keep the skeeters at bay.
I have a few chip monks (ground squirrels) running around in the yard. They like to tease the dogs and cats. There’s one that hangs out in the dog pen and like to race the dogs when we let the terriers out. But the chip monks are getting fuzzier and fatter than normal. I think it’s a sign that it’s going to be a long, cold winter and maybe an earlier winter. This is a warning. Alvin says winter is on its way.
And don’t worry. The pups will never catch Alvin.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Interval training…Tuesday, 08.28.2012, Lutheran High School, North Alpine Road, 5:45 pm. I think there’s some Waterfront 5K training involved.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Don’t forget, September 2013? The BG is heading to the Cedar City Half-Marathon in Cedar City Utah.
So, book the date.
I’ll be there…will you?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lessons learned…
It’s a good idea to carry your cell phone with you when you run. You never know if there will be an emergency and you need to call someone/police quickly. And the emergencies don’t necessarily involve you. You just never know what you’ll find out on a run.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Remember, the BG is on Facebook. The link to the group now is: http://www.facebook.com/pages/3R-Buddy-Group/113136022536.
The dates and activities for the next month or so should be out there. So, look for some information there. And go ahead and write on the wall. Let others know about your running adventures.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you need information about a run or location, feel free to give me a call at 815-222-1280.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WANTED: New places to run and/or new places for recovery. All ideas will be entertained.
If you want to share any ideas for a run or recovery; if you'll be venturing to a distant race and you want to car-pool with some folks; or if you're training for a race and you want a training partner, pass the information onto me and I'll send the word out to others.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thursday, 08.30.12, Meet at Pino’s on North Main Street. It’s the cemetery tour. We’ll head downtown, cross the bridge and head back on the bike path. Recovery is at Pino’s. Meeting time is 6:00 pm.
Saturday, 09.01.12, Meet at the small parking lot on Hart Road in Rock Cut State Park just east of Perryville Road. About a block in, there’s a small parking lot on the right. We’ll run a loop around Rock Cut. Meeting time is 7:00 am.
Thursday, 09.06.12, Meet at Blackhawk Springs Forest Preserve on South Mulford Road. It’s time for Edweena. Recovery is at Maciano’s on Harrison Road. Meeting time is 6:00 pm.

Hi Folks,
Note to self…Even though the Olympics are over, I will watch track and field events on TV. Great athletes just don’t perform every four years.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
RAVE RUN…
I received this note from a BG’er about the Olympics after last week’s email hit the transmission lines.
My Olympic moment...apart from the opening and closing ceremony...Mo Hayer, who Jack says looks like ET...his face, grinning from ear to ear, when he won the gold for Britain in the men's 5,000m and 10,000m. What a joy.
Send me your favorite Youtube video’s, stories, and photos of moments, experiences, places, or people that you feel we can enjoy reading about in the BG email.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And now for some messages from the Hippy Dippy Weatherman.
Hot…cold…hot…cold. I wish da Mudda will make up her mind. I think she has. It will be cold by December…give or take.
Two things…
I noticed lately as I’ve been running after quitting time from my imaginary job, the sun has been setting earlier and earlier. So, as we go into fall and the dark months, please wear reflective gear and clothing so that you can stand out to drivers. And along these lines, start thinking about gear for the winter months. We run in the dark, so some headlamps and other lights will come in handy during our winter runs.
And sorry, I’m just the message carrier.
Second…West Nile Virus. Dallas Texas has been hit hard with West Nile Virus of late. It seems over the last few months, with the hot, dry weather, skeeters in this area haven’t been out. But, with the rains we’ve had over the last few weeks, I’m sure they’re just waiting to fly again. So, please wear insect repellant and keep West Nile Virus at bay. I really want to go toe to toe with you at upcoming races. Don’t let mosquitoes ruin that.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Interval training…Tuesday, 08.21.2012, Lutheran High School, North Alpine Road, 5:45 pm. I believe the intervals are short but with a twist, a very hard twist.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So, what are you doing in September 2013? The BG has been invited by Audrey (ok imposed by the group but with no opposition) to the Cedar City Half-Marathon in Cedar City Utah. The date is September 14, 2013 and it’s deemed as an amazing run on the best 13.1 course around.
So, book the date.
As next year rolls around and we’ve conquered another Rockford Half-Marathon, it will be time to set our sights on the Cedar City Half. So, put it in your racing calendar for next year. Over the first few month of next year, I’ll check out room rates, flights, etc etc etc. I know that the three of the greatest national parks are within a short drive of the race. So, you can plan some vacation time around the half.
I’ll be there…will you?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lessons learned…
At last week’s recovery, we talked about an incident that happened to a fellow runner while out on a run at Midway Village. Her car was broken in to. Apparently, they took her purse which included credit cards, cell phones, etc etc etc.
Before you leave your home, secure your personal stuff ie purse, wallet, money, in a safe location in your car. I understand that thieves watch where you put your stuff as you get ready for a run, only to come back to your car when you’re out running. Don’t give thieves the opportunity to steal. Take care of yourself.

Thursday, 08.23.12, Meet at Maciano’s on Perryville Road. We’ll run north on the bike path towards Rock Cut State Park. The distance should be about 5-6 miles of hills…yes, we love hills. Recovery is at Maciano’s on Perryville. Meeting time is 6:00 pm.
Saturday, 08.25.12, Meet at the northwest corner of State and Madison Streets. We’ll head north along the river on the bike path. The distance should be about 6+ miles. Meeting time is 7:00 am.
Thursday, 08.30.12, Meet at Pino’s on North Main Street. It’s the cemetery tour and this time, I think I can find the way. After the cemetery, we’ll head downtown, cross the bridge and head back on the bike path. Recovery is at Pino’s. Meeting time is 6:00 pm.

Hi Folks,
Note to self…Compromising your integrity, let’s the devil know your price.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
RAVE RUN…
Now, I’m suffering with POS, Post Olympic Syndrome. Overall, I enjoyed the Olympics. I should have asked a month ago, for folks to send me their memorable Olympic moments. Then you would have thought about it when you watched the Olympics over the last few weeks. If you have a memory, drop me a note for an upcoming Rave Run.
But here are some of my closing moments from the Olympics from the last week or so….
Funny, even though the race was held earlier in the day and the winners named, I still yelled at the TV Saturday night while the US and Jamaica ran the 100X4 relays. The US’s time tied the world record. Now if we can only keep Bolt off their team. BTW…I heard that in the 100 meter, Bolt takes 47 steps while most others take 52. ZZ Top…he’s got the legs.
My hats off go to Sarah Attar from the Saudi Republic. She ran the women’s 800 meter race. She came in last, about a minute behind the winner and the race is about two minutes (and change) long. But she finished and she represented a country that has a very male dominant culture.
Then there’s Liu Xiang from China. Poor guy. His race was the 110 hurdles. He didn’t make it over the first hurdle and crashed to the ground. But, knowing he had to finish what he started, decided to get off the ground and limp to the finish line. I believe I saw on TV where he graciously kissed the last hurdle, perhaps a show of respect to the race.
And there’s Morgan Uceny from the US. She was favored to win (or at least medal) in the women’s 1500 meter final. The bell rang out signaling the final lap of the race. Somehow, Uceny tripped and crashed to the ground. The camera showed her angry, mad, and hitting the ground in discuss. I think I commented “that’s what we’ll remember about her, she should have finished”. Honestly, it brought back memories of Zola Budd and Mary Decker from the 1984 Olympic 3000 meter race. I remember Mary Decker in tears. I believe there’s a quote from General Patton that goes something like…it doesn’t matter how many times you fall, it’s how many times you get up. So Morgan Uceny, I’ll forever remember you…on the ground.
These are some of my great moments from the last week or so. When you race, run, or even clam…give it your best. That’s what we’ll remember.
And if you have a favorite Olympic moment, send it my way. I’ll through it in the Rave Run. Now, it’s onto our next favorite sport occurring every four years…conventions and presidential campaigning.
Send me your favorite Youtube video’s, stories, and photos of moments, experiences, places, or people that you feel we can enjoy reading about in the BG email.

Final plea…Armando is running the Chicago Marathon on behalf of the Mission of our Lady Angels charity. If you want to make a donation, please make checks or money orders out to Mission of Our Lady of Angels and send them to: Armando Quinones Sr., 516 Blenheim Dr., Rockford IL 61108.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And now for some messages from the Hippy Dippy Weatherman.
I think da Mudda has been smoking too many funny mushrooms. A few weeks ago, it was hot. And now, you almost need a long sleeved shirt for this weather.
As you run, please be careful of the temperature changed. The body needs time to acclimate to the temperatures and weather conditions.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Interval training…Tuesday, 08.14.2012, Lutheran High School, North Alpine Road, 5:45 pm. I think the workout is 800 meters…good ones and bad ones. WOW! Good luck.

Hi Folks,
Note to self…When the going gets tough, at the end, the tough go to Disney.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
RAVE RUN…
I hope everyone has been watching the Olympics. With my down time, I’ve been able to catch some interesting events, like fencing. Talk about a quick sport. Or there’s trampoline. Really? Where’s Judy Ford?
But in watching the events over the last 10 days or so, a few moments stuck in my head.
I was watching the women’s 10,000 meter finals on Friday afternoon. The lead pack of 4 or 5 women caught the slower runners with about 2 or 3 laps to the finish. I remember many times, I knew I wasn’t going to finish with the big dogs and decided to stay on the porch.
Then there’s the men’s 400 meter run qualifying race. LeShawn Merritt. He pulled a hamstring a few weeks ago. He decided to run the 400 meter race. After all, he’s the defending champion. About 100 meters into the race, the hamstring gave out and he limped off the field. I wish I had a nickel for every time I decided that my muscles and joints were sore and decided to stay home.
Then there’s Oscar Pistorious, 400 meter runner. Need I say anything?
But my favorite moment over the last 10 days of the Olympics is the rower from Niger, Hamadou Djibo Issaka. He started in the sport of rowing back in May. He came in last in his heat of races, but his comment, "I passed the finish line. It was great." And sorry Cali-Chick, I don’t think he cared on how well he looked.
I guess the point of my Rave Run is, how many times have we felt like the athletics I mentioned above and decided to clam it? I know for me, there have been many times. But what makes the athletics at the Olympics different from us, is they try, they don’t care if they come in last. They gave it their best.
Sure, one can say that they did this because it’s the Olympics. And I’ll agree. But we are all Olympic athletics in our own right and we should take some heed to what the Olympics demonstrate for us. Go for it, life’s not a dress rehearsal. You just never know when you’re going to strike GOLD.
Send me your favorite Youtube video’s, stories, and photos of moments, experiences, places, or people that you feel we can enjoy reading about in the BG email.

Hi Folks,
Note to self…While our attention is focused on the American swimmers at the London Olympic games, there was a women who medaled in her 5th Olympic games in skeet shooting. Her name is Kim Rhode.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
RAVE RUN…
Rumor has it and I read it on the Internet (so it must be true) that the current distance of the marathon was set at the 1908 London Olympics so that the runners can finish in from of the Royal Box.
This Sunday is the women’s Olympic marathon. Of course, all of our TV’s will be set to watch the race and for about 3 hours, our eyes will be glued to the screen. I’m not sure if anyone from the Royal Family will be in attendance. They’re too busy jumping out of airplanes.
Got to love it!

Interval training…Tuesday, 07.31.2012, Rock Cut State Park, Puri Crest picnic area, 5:45 pm.

Lessons learned…
When you're preparing for your next race , make sure you pin your bib number to your shirt AND put the chip on your shoe. In case of emergency, however , the race scorers are helpful and will give you a replacement chip if you do leave yours at home. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note to self…I need to remind myself that today’s home runs, don’t win tomorrow’s ballgames.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
RAVE RUN…
Over the last few years, we’ve run the cemetery tour. It leaves from Pino’s on North Main Street and heads downtown before heading back on the bike path and through Greenwood Cemetery. I’ve often kidded that we need to find my relatives in the cemetery while on the way through.
Today, I’ve found them. And the last time we ran through the cemetery, we weren’t that far from them.

I heard on the local weather station this past week, the forecast for this winter is mild, more so than last winter. While it’s great for running, it doesn’t help with the water shortage.
Remember in this heat, drink plenty of liquids. Wear a hat and sunglasses to help with the sun. Wear an insect repellant to ward off skeeters.

"It's unnatural for people to run around city streets unless they are thieves or victims. It makes people nervous to see someone running. I know that when I see someone running on my street, my instincts tell me to let the dog after him.” ~Mike Royko, newspaper columnist

Hi Folks,
Note to self…Saw my first back to school sales commercial. Oh boy, here comes Santa Claus, here comes Santa Claus, walking down Santa Claus trail.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
RAVE RUN…
There’s just something calming about running in a cemetery. It’s a peaceful and tranquil place. There are a few games you can play while you’re heading around on the roads. You can play tombstone bingo where you try to find the oldest and newest tombstone in the cemetery. You can also play, ‘Name That Family’ where you try and figure out if the surname on the headstone has any historical significant to the area.

Last Thursday, the folks at recovery called an audible. This Thursday, 07/12/2012, instead of meeting for our run at Maciano’s, we’re meeting at Blackhawk Spring Forest Preserve on South Mulford Road. Recovery will still be at Maciano’s.
Don’t forget your bug spray.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And now for some messages from the Hippy Dippy Weatherman.
Drink plenty of liquids. Wear a hat and sunglasses to help with the sun. Wear an insect repellant to ward off skeeters.
Da Mudda wants to correct my January forecast of snow and low temperatures to mild weather and temperatures in the 80’s.

Lessons learned…
If you are going to race in extreme heat, you must hydrate the week before, not the morning of, plus find a race with lots of shade.
I felt sick after the MELD 8K on the 4th of July. I have not had that happen before, even after the 20K Survivor Run on 3/17 or the Rockford half. Both those races were on very warm humid days.
Looking back at the week before the MELD, I realized I didn’t drink my usual amount of water during the day at work. Too busy I guess, and I only had 2 work days before the race. Big mistake. I am usually very good about drinking a lot of water during the days before races.
The nice thing about trail runs is lots of shade, and it was cool under the pine trees giving us a break.

Hi Folks,
Note to self…This week we celebrate the birthday of our great country. Last year, I had the privilege of visiting the National Archives where I viewed the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. I also visited the Smithsonian Museum of American History and saw the Stars and Stripes (the one that flew over Fort McHenry during the penning of the Star Spangled Banner). Happy Birthday America. You have chinks in your armor, but you’re still standing strong.
The Fourth of July is the start of…back to school sales and county fairs.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
RAVE RUN…
Last week I noted about the bird that I found on the bike path and moved him to the grassy area. It was great to hear from a few folks about similar actions.
While da Mudda can kick our butts with the weather, I think she’s like us for watching out for her little critters.

Last week I mentioned the story about the US’s women’s 100 meter Olympic team. The third place finishers…tied. This evening there was to be a runoff for the final spot between Allyson Felix and Jeneba Tarmoh. Late this afternoon Tarmoh conceded the spot to Felix.
The Olympics start later this month. Presuming my TV antennae is working; I’ll record some events and host recovery while watching them.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And now for some messages from the Hippy Dippy Weatherman.
Still hot, still humid, still buggy.
Drink plenty of liquids. Wear a hat and sunglasses to help with the sun. Wear an insect repellant to ward off skeeters.
Please take care of yourself in this repressive heat.
Forecast is for 8 inches of snow and temperatures hovering near 10 degrees…next January.

Hi Folks,
Note to self…The rush of work is over, at least for a while. I’m going to Disney.
RAVE RUN…
As most of you know, I’m a nature nut and an animal lover. This past Saturday while I was starting my run at Blackhawk Springs Forest Preserve, I noticed a little bird on the path. It looks like the little guy took off too early from the nest for his maiden flight. Not wanting him to get harmed, I found a large leaf from a rutabaga plant and kinda pushed him to the side of the path and went to visit Edweena.
Upon my return, the little guy was still on the side of the path so I decided he needed to be moved more into the woods. Taking the rutabaga leaf, I moved him into the woods a few more feet. By this time, it appeared that he wanted to fly and he was flapping his wings. Maybe I’ll nickname him, North Carolina…first in flight. But, I hope he makes it. At least, I did my best by helping him out.
Whatever the reason for running, there are always a lot more things that can be experienced while on a run.
BTW…Edweena kicked my rear.
Send me your favorite Youtube video’s, stories, and photos of moments, experiences, places, or people that you feel we can enjoy reading about in the BG email.
Did you hear the story about the 100 meter women’s Olympic berth finals in Eugene Oregon this past weekend? The third place finishers…tied. Now the USATF is trying to decide how to break the tie. Despite all of the high speed cameras and electronic timing, Allyson Felix and Jeneba Tarmoh both finished at the same time. One idea the USATF is mulling over as a tie breaker…coin toss. You run a million miles to qualify for the Olympics, and your fate to the big dance is decided by a Lincoln penny.
And now for some messages from the Hippy Dippy Weatherman.
Hot, humid, buggy.
Drink plenty of liquids. Wear a hat and sunglasses to help with the sun. Wear an insect repellant to ward off skeeters.
Interval training…Lutheran High School, 06.26.2012, 5:45 pm. It looks like Ron has a good workout planned.
Beginning 07/03/3012, the group will be meeting at Rock Cut at the Puri Crest Park.
Lessons learned…
Don’t try different socks when doing a race. I wore a thinner pair of socks with my new shoes for the MK23 race. I had tried the shoes on when I bought them while wearing a thicker pair and they felt good. The thinner pair allowed my feet to slide around and now the outside edges of my little toes are sore.

Hi Folks,
Note to self…I need to race more often.
RAVE RUN…
In last week’s mailbox, I received this note from Scott….
Last year I was signed up to run the Rockford Half in May. I was ready: laid my clothes out, carb loaded, liquefied, etc…everything was perfect. Got up the morning of the race and headed out. Driving down 251 I passed the “official clock” only to see it read 18 minutes AND COUNTING UP. My heart sank. I called home and had my wife look up the time of the race…confirmed my fears, I had it wrong. I thought it started at 8, not 7. Still don’t know if the time changed from the year before (which I ran) or if I just had it in my head it was 8 but either way I was crushed. (Lesson learned, I always double check starting times now.)
I turned around and headed toward home. As I drove I thought, “this is either a crushing blow after months of training or a learning experience”. I couldn’t go home and tell my kids I didn’t run the distance. I wanted to teach them that you don’t quit when things don’t go the way you plan. I pulled into the parking lot on Atwood Rd (Stone Bridge Path), strapped on my GPS and water, stretched & took off running for 13.1 miles, finishing within a minute of my PR. At the “finish line” there was no crowd (the only witness being my GPS watch), no medal and no recovery tent…but there was an overwhelming sense of personal satisfaction knowing I had done what I set out to do, official or not.
I went home on one of the biggest runner’s “highs” I have ever had and sat down with the kids to explain my mistake and how we never quit no matter what life brings us. We don’t need medals or external rewards to know in our hearts we have done well/the right thing (although the bling would have been nice!!).
Send me your favorite Youtube video’s, stories, and photos of moments, experiences, places, or people that you feel we can enjoy reading about in the BG email.
And now for some messages from the Hippy Dippy Weatherman.
It’s summer, which usually means that there is more traffic on the local bike paths. So be careful as you run along the byways and highways in the area. Pay careful attention to the little kids, the 2 and 3 year olds and on bicycles. They always seem to want to race and in doing so, don’t watch where they’re going.
Remember…intervals on Tuesday at Lutheran High School during June. They’re held Tuesdays at 5:45 pm.
Recap of the Dakota 5K:
This past Saturday, a few BG’ers ventured to Dakota Illinois for a 5K race. The race was a fund raiser for the local school. They want to build a running track. There were about 75 runners at the race, most of them middle and high school kids. There were no bib numbers, no starting pistol, and no clocks. The race was a simple out and back along country roads. There was a young lady manning the water station at the turn around point.
I think most if not all of the BG’ers placed in their age group. I placed third. And I believe most if not all BG’ers won a prize from a drawing that was held after the race.
What seems to be the best part of the race was that it was a fresh course along with fresh faces. Everyone at the line looked like they were out there to have fun, no pretense of winning the race or their age class. It was good old fashion running, something you did as a kid. Small town America, where you let little kids beat you so that they can brag about it all summer. Even the cows in the pasture seemed to like the idea we were out there. At one point in the race, when the main pack ran by the pasture, the cows ran (stampeded) towards the back of the race almost as if racing against the runners.
Will there be a 4th annual Dakota 5K? If there is, count me in.

Lessons learned ideas
If you’re heading to a race and you wear contacts, it’s wise to take along a spare pair. You never know if you’re going to drop one while waiting for the race to start and having to race blindly. It can ruin a great time.

Hi Folks,
Note to self…Chip timing. With chip timing on Saturday, I may have placed.
And now for some messages from the Hippy Dippy Weatherman.
This mainly goes to our Coyote buddies but everyone should take notice. Ticks. It’s tick season. And some ticks carry…you guessed it, Lyme’s disease. As you are finished running through the trails or over grassy areas, check yourself for any ticks. Keep Lyme’s disease at bay.
A couple of symptoms of Lyme’s disease are: flu like symptoms and a red rash on the skin with a bull’s eye. If you come down with these symptoms, don’t hesitate to visit a medical facility. Lyme’s disease can be crippling and even deadly.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And this was sent in by Audrey. These intervals are open to everyone. And trust me…running 400’s on a track…is pretty awesome. Just thing you’re Pre.
It's that time again. Peak's Running Crew transforms itself and shows up at the track running workouts that no man or woman should be allowed to run. There is usually a great deal of complaining and unwillingness to walk to their vehicles after the workout is completed. Some have even asked to be carried to their car. We'll get right on that request.
Again this year, we'll be running at the Lutheran High School. If you know or run into Gary Griffin (Athletic Director at Lutheran) or Don Kortze (Principal at Lutheran), please thank them for the use of their track. It's a great facility and an honor to be able to utilize the track in the summer months.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I’m signed up for the Dakota 5K fun run on June 9th. Have you? The race is a fundraiser for the school booster club where they want to build a track. We’ll meet at the Hilander on North Mulford Road at 6:30am and we’ll carpool to Dakota.
Almost forgot…rumor has it, someone knows how to pick their races.
Lessons learned ideas
At every race (ok, most races), I hear the announcer mention that slower runners to the back of the starting back. Since the races are timed from the starting gun to your finish, I always come in minutes if not hours after the gun time.
Well, from now on, I’m starting at the front. Sorry Penguin, I’m no longer a ‘back of the packer’. I want to make sure I gain those precious minutes and hours from others in my age group. I want to get a medal.
And if you’re a speed demon…just think of my as that driver on the highway, going 65pmh in the left hand lane.
(Please read last weeks email.)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And now for some messages from the Hippy Dippy Weatherman.
Do you believe this? It’s been very warm over the last couple of weeks. And for Thursday’s run…snow. I think da Mudda likes toying with us.
Checklist for your next run:
1. Sunscreen and a hat.
2. Mosquito repellant
3. Water for you and your pup.

Rockford Half-Marathon…last comments.
Last week I explained that I didn’t receive a finisher’s medal. (I’ve been told that there’s one in the mail.) I received a few emails from folks who seemed perplexed with the idea that I didn’t get one. And a few the folks offered me their medal, for which I’m thankful.
But you know, I didn’t run the race to get a medal.
A fellow Buddy Grouper once commented to me that her friend runs races for the finishers medals and her friend was disappointed with the Literacy Council when they handed out a brass bookmark at the end of their half-marathon. But I don’t run races to get a finishers medal. I run them because I can. Because I want to do something that few folks have an inkling to do. I do it for the shear joy of knowing that running adds days to my life and life to my days. I remember a conversation I had with a local doctor who told me my marathon days were over. I proved him wrong and I’ll probably prove him wrong again.
A finisher’s medal won’t keep the doctor at bay but training and running the race will. When my finisher’s medal arrives, I’ll wrap the ribbon around it and add it to the shelf with my other medals. The brass bookmarks from the Literacy Council’s half-marathons, two of them are in books and one hangs on the Christmas tree every season. The first one counts.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A few folks have expressed their desire to go to Dakota for the inaugural 5K fun run on June 9th. The race is a fundraiser for the school. They want to build a track. So, let’s meet at Hilander on North Mulford Road at 6:30am and we’ll carpool to Dakota.
The link to the registration form and other information is: http://www.dakota201.com/Portals/0/Dakota%20Fun%20Run%20Entry.pdf
Almost forgot…April is a member of the BG and the track coach in Dakota. Maybe she can give us some hints. Maybe if we twist her arm, she can get the track named about the Buddy Group…NOT!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lessons learned ideas
Never underestimate the damage an old pair of shoes can wreak during a race. Blisters so bad I couldn’t finish even though I only had 1.1m to go!
Another good lesson learned about shoes…have two pairs of running shoes and alternate between them. It will keep your shoes fresh; give them the time to dry out sufficiently; keep your feet and legs fresh; among other reasons.

Hi Folks,
Note to self…When I run in a race that offers a finishers medal, I need to run fast enough in order to get a finishers medal before they’re gone. Yesterday, I have the satisfaction of knowing, I completed the Rockford Half-Marathon. But I did get a cool tech tee-shirt.

RAVE RUN…
My two cents recap of yesterday’s Rockford Half-Marathon…
It was hot. It was sunny. But it was fun. Sure, there was a crowd of runners at the start of the race. But the crowds dissipated in the first mile or so. And by the time we got to the Boylan High School area, we were met by the cargo truck picking up supplied. Yes, by the time we got to the 3 mile mark, they started to break the course down. But we always seem to stay one step ahead of them.
The folks who were breaking down the aid stations were a pleasant bunch. They offered us, many times, a free ride back to the starting line in their air conditioned truck. But we trudged on. At the 9 mile aid station, it was becoming apparent that the heat and sun were starting to take their toll on some folks. They slowed down while I seemed to have got my second wind and moved ahead. It was great to see that despite my slow pace in the half-marathon, I was able to beat my estimated time.
In closing, the race was great. Did I say that it was hot and sunny?
Others…what’s your rave moments from yesterday’s race?

And now for some messages from the Hippy Dippy Weatherman.
Checklist for your next run:
1. Sunscreen and a hat.
2. Mosquito repellant
3. Water
And if you decide to run with your favorite training partner, your pup, remember that dogs can’t handle the heat like humans can. Please be kind to them.

Rockford Half-Marathon…
Recap…
It was great to see a large turn out from the Buddy Group. It shows the spirit of the group and the focus we have towards running. Congratulations to everyone who participated in yesterdays races. As I mentioned on the Facebook page: We came. We saw. We conquered.
As the town crier of the group, it’s great to be part of a great group of runners. Though we may not see each other on every run, a common thread still bonds us to the sport and spirit of running.
And just think, we were all novices 8 years ago. Look at how far we’ve come.
One final note…this Thursday, May 24th, we’ll have a Heavy Medal Thursday. Anyone who raced this spring and has hardware, come on down to Carlyle’s to show off your medals. Those who’ve finished and don’t have medals to show, come down anyways. We know you did it.

Hi Folks,
Note to self…Who let the dogs out? Someone needs to call animal control. The dog days of summer are staying around way too long.

RAVE RUN…
Because of the high temperatures, the group has been doing a lot more walking than running lately. Edweena can kick butt even if you’re walking. She can be a real pain in the butt.

I received this message from Armando this week. Many charities raise a lot of funds through their sponsorship of athletics in their goals of running a marathon. I ran Chicago in 2004 and 2005 for the Alzheimer's group. Please consider donating what you can to a great Buddy Grouper and his organization.
Dear Family, Friends and Supporters
Guess what!?!?! I’m doing something crazy again! I’m running the 2012 Chicago Marathon for Mission Our Lady of the Angels, a Catholic Mission serving the poor on Chicago’s West side. The Mission serves 700+ families a month with food and other basic material needs, assists 900+ at risk kids in after-school programs, and, most importantly, brings the Hope of Christ to a neighborhood plagued by gangs, violence and poverty.
As you all know I participate in many marathons. I made plans to run in the Chicago Marathon. Due to the large number of people running in the marathon my application was denied. But thanks to Our lady of the Angels, a Catholic Mission I was able to gain entrance in the marathon. All they asked of me was that I help raise money for their church renovations.
I am committed to train (running over 400 miles) over the long, hot summer and run 26.2 miles on Marathon Sunday . . . and I am counting on your support! I need your prayers to persevere through training and finish the race. Your prayers are needed so I can successfully spread the good news about the Mission through my running. Finally, I need your financial support. The Mission is working hard to renovate the church building they’ve inherited, which is essential to expand the Mission’s outreach. We need to raise nearly $1 Million from people just like you to get this project done. Every penny counts!
Please make checks or money orders out to Mission of Our Lady of Angels.
Thank you and God bless you!

And now for some messages from the Hippy Dippy Weatherman.

Interval training…Tuesday, 07.17.2012, Rock Cut State Park, Puri Crest picnic area, 5:45 pm.

Lessons learned…
Trail running can be dangerous. One danger that I pointed out before, are ticks in the parks and long the trails just waiting for someone to run by so they can have dinner. Another danger is the possibility of tripping over some roots and branches making you crash to the ground which can lead to broken bones. But just when you thought you have the trail running hazards covered, there’s another, poison ivy.
During one of our recent runs, someone mentioned they had a quick lesson about poison ivy when they ran out at Rock Cut a couple of weeks ago. You get the itches from the oils on the leaves of poison ivy plants. Your hands and bare legs come into contact with the poison ivy as you run along the trails. And the poison ivy stuff is pretty prevalent at Rock Cut.
One way to help with poison ivy on your legs is to spray your legs with an aerosol cooking oil like Pam. I don’t know if it works, but you may want to give it a try. And if you’re afraid of tripping over a branch and falling face first into a poison ivy plant, spray your head with the stuff as well. I bet it will work.
Whether you like the aerosol cooking oil idea or now, watch your step as you venture on the trails. And watch for the three leafed plant with red berries.
